Head coach Guy Luzon doesn’t sound convinced by keeper Stephen Henderson’s suggestion Charlton still have an outside chance of making the play-offs.

Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest made it four wins from the last five games, prompting Henderson to claim his side could make a late surge for the top six.

But with the Addicks still a long way off Brentford in that final play-off spot, Luzon is taking a far more realistic approach.

He said: “I think it is too far – 16 points behind and 35 games played.

“I think it is far away but we don’t need to think about it, we need to think only about the next game and to do the maximum to win the three points.

“If at the end we have some opportunity to do it of course we will do it, but now we are far away.

“Now our target is only Cardiff on Saturday.”

On the visit to the Welsh capital, Luzon added: “I’m expecting from my team, not from Cardiff.

“I’m expecting my team to keep consistency in defence and offence and to play our football on the ground and try to score goals.”

Johann Gudmundsson and Chris Solly are expected to return this weekend after missing the Forest game, with Roger Johnson also likely to travel.

Top scorer Igor Vetokele came off late on in the midweek win and will be assessed tomorrow, but Tal Ben Haim is definitely ruled out.

Although Tony Watt might not have scored in the Forest triumph, he did at least get another full 90 minutes under his belt, leaving the boss more than happy with how things are going for the Scotsman.

Luzon said: “Tony Watt in the last period has played very well, not only in offence but also defensively. He improved his game, he worked a lot on the defensive side.

“He worked hard to intercept the balls and to make it easier to attack. He has made a great deal of progress.”

Tuesday also saw recent addition Alou Diarra complete his first full game in Addicks colours at centre half and again the manager was impressed.

Luzon added: “Alou Diarra also played very well as a central defender.

“He brings experience, he brings quality and is a very good player for us.”
