STUDENTS questioned controversial French politician Marine Le Pen at the Oxford Union as more than 200 protesters gathered outside.

The leader of the right-wing French National Front party, the third largest in France, spoke at the Oxford University debating society off Cornmarket on Thursday.

Guests were left waiting for an hour over security concerns before they heard Le Pen field questions on antisemitism and Islamophobia in front of a packed debating chamber.

Members of Oxford Unite Against Fascism, which had called on the Union to rescind its invitation, organised the outdoor demonstration with banners saying ‘Le Pen...Never Again.’ Addressing an audience of 450 Ms Le Pen said: “I’m asking you to listen to me, not to like me.

“Your institution is known for defending freedom of speech.

“Contrary to my caricature, I believe in political pluralism. I have never stopped anyone from speaking.

“I have never tried to stop my political foes from speaking, perhaps this is one of the differences between us.”

Oxford Union president Lisa Wehden said: “I’d like to thank Thames Valley Police, the Union staff and committee for all their help with this event. I would also like to thank our members for their patience waiting for the event to start.”
