A POWERCUT affecting 2,079 homes and businesses in Oxford and Abingdon has been fixed.

Engineers restored electricity to SSE customers at 3.36pm by re-routing power.

Now they are trying to work out was caused the underground fault on the high voltage network.

The cut, which covered the OX1 postcode area, also included traffic lights on Abingdon Road and Speedwell Street Tesco, shoppers told the Oxford Mail.

SSE spokeswoman Lisa Marchi said the fault could be underground or it could be a fallen overhead line.

She apologised to all affected customers.

A separate power cut affected Baynards Green north of Bicester. It is understood that has since been fixed.
