FASHION icon Dame Vivienne Westwood said “capitalism is destroying the world” in a talk at Oxford’s Divinity School.

She appeared at the Bodleian Library venue to promote her self-titled autobiography on Monday.

Widely known for her activism, the talk focused on the political causes handed to visitors in a leaflet on the “end of capitalism”.

She spoke of her passion for anti-fracking and the Green Party, her life and Yves Saint Laurent as the “King of Fashion”.

She said: “I want to make sure as many people as possible read that. Capitalism is destroying the world. The urgency is so challenging and what we can do today is so much more than what we can do tomorrow.”

She said of her blog: “The blog started as a diary, I wanted to communicate my ideas and when you try to communicate you start to ask yourself questions.”

The discussion, hosted by Blackwell’s bookshop, was led by filmmaker Lorna Tucker, who is working with Dame Vivienne on a documentary about her life.

She said: “Working with Vivienne has been amazing.”

Dame Westwood hosted a book signing afterwards.

Botley’s Roisin Alvy, 22, said: “I have followed Vivienne since I was 15 and it is really lovely that she is at a point in her career where she has been able to do exactly what is important to her now.”
