A PLANNING application which could see Woodstock double in size has been formally registered with Cherwell District Council.

Plans for 1,500 homes, a 150-unit care village, a site for a new primary school and up to 930sqm of retail space were lodged with the council’s planning department.

The plans cover part of the 10,000-acre Blenheim Palace estate. The land is being sold to help fund £40m repair work the stately home needs over the next 20 years.

Planning consultants West Waddy, on behalf of the estate and Pye Homes, notified both Cherwell District Council and West Oxfordshire District Council about the plans in September, as the 66-hectare development would straddle both districts.

The development which will be located between the A44 Oxford Road and Shipton Road, next to Oxford Airport, would include a 2,325sqm supermarket and 7,500sqm of employment space.

In West Oxfordshire District Council’s current draft Local Plan, the location was identified as a potential site for housing to be built.

A decision on the plans is expected to be made on February 3 next year.
