AFTER a lifetime of listening to Elvis Presley, Nick Stanton’s dying wish was to see The King perform live.

And tomorrow the Carterton man will be all shook up when one of Britain’s top Elvis impersonators performs at his 53rd birthday party.

Mr Stanton, who has Down’s syndrome and is in the final stages of dementia, will probably not live to see his next birthday, so his support workers Deanne Petrie and Anya Dunne decided to give him an extra special party this week.

Elvis impersonator Miguel Olivares-Alvarez, who performed at David Cameron’s birthday party in Witney in 2009, will travel from his home in Bishop’s Stortford in Hertfordshire to put on the show.

Ms Petrie said: “Nick is a big lovable guy and very independent.

“The idea of Elvis coming to his birthday just came into my head a few weeks ago.

“It will be Nick’s last year with us and he has been in and out of hospital because of seizures since Boxing Day last year.

“We just wanted to do something special for him.”

Passionate Arsenal fan Mr Stanton grew up in Faringdon before moving to sheltered housing in Carterton in 2009.

His twin sister Janie said: “He is 10 minutes older than me so he is my big brother.

“They said he would not survive until our 18th birthday and yet three years ago we celebrated our 50th.

“He is a genuine star and he loves Elvis and Shakin’ Stevens.

“When Deanne and Anya said they were going to book Elvis for his party I said I did not care how much it cost, I would have taken out a loan if I couldn’t afford it.

“It is probably going to be his last birthday so we need to know that he will have a good time and give him five minutes of joy.”

Mr Stanton will turn 53 on December 3 and is hoping Mr Olivares-Alvarez will perform his favourite Elvis songs, Love Me Tender and Jailhouse Rock.

In his younger days he was a keen sportsman and competed in the Paralympics.

Mr Olivares-Alvarez said: “When I was asked to perform I decided I was going to make this happen for him because a dying man’s wish is something we should all make possible.

“I have done shows for people in similar situations and I enjoy the joy that it brings.

“It is a long drive for me from Bishop’s Stortford but I will leave feeling good about doing something for Nick.”
