BROWNIES in Bicester raised money for the Royal British Legion by baking cakes and collecting spare change.

It was part of the 7th Bicester Brownies’ work for their Poppy Badge to mark Remembrance Sunday and the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The youngsters raised£102 for the Bicester & District Branch of the RBL, which helps veterans and families of those killed in service.

A cake sale and a challenge to fit as many 20p pieces as possible into an empty tube of Smarties raised the cash.

Erin Meaney, eight, said: “I’m really proud of the money we raised.”

On Thursday, November 20 they presented the money to branch member Keith Lester, who is also the grandfather of 10-year-old Amy.

As part of the badge they are also sending care packages to troops in Sierra Leone in time for Christmas.
