SIX-year-old diabetes sufferer Millie Newton has inspired her whole school to raise money for diabetes research.

Millbrook Primary School, in Grove, held a ‘Type-Onesie’ day where staff and pupils made a donation to wear a onesie to school, and raised £450.

Millie, who lives with her family in Grove, was diagnosed with type one diabetes in April this year.

Her dad, John Newton, a safety engineer at Harwell, said: “It was a shock to start with, then it was a life-changer.”

He and Millie’s mum Sarah now have to monitor how many carbohydrates she eats, give her four insulin injections a day and monitor her blood sugar.

But he said: “She is taking it in her stride. She gets fed-up with not being able to eat sweets like other children sometimes, but she does her own injections.”

He and mum asked Millbrook teachers if they would do a sponsored Type-Onesie day, and he said: “They’ve been incredible.

“They said yes immediately.”

They went to the school last Friday to talk to staff and pupils about what diabetes means for Millie and millions of sufferers.
