IT'S a challenge lighting people well in low light.

It’s easy to blast the flash which lights the subject but renders everything else black, but to control the light on your subject while also balancing the surrounding ambient light is the trick.

Andrew Walmsley has done a fine job capturing Bill Spectre, above, on his ghost trail, spookily lit within a “Dickensian” street scene.

And as if that wasn’t enough, he’s even managed to light the book... ha ha!

Ed Nix covered the fireworks display at Witney Rugby Club. I like the framing here, above, with the gathered crowds, the sky full of fireworks and the way the cloud streaks lead my eyes from the right towards the action.

Tasked with getting a picture ahead of an English Civil War Society re-enactment at Wallingford Castle, Cliff Hide got some beautifully atmospheric shots of Royalist Officer Richard King, above, in silhouette against the misty backdrops of Castle Meadow.

A frame within a frame can be a great compositional tool, and here, above, Jon Lewis utilises it well as we appear to see the cooking action through the service hatch. He really involves us in the culinary action as Raymond Blanc, North Kidlington Primary pupil Miriam Willis and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg prepare breakfast as part as National School Meals Week.

Oxford Mail:

As Jon Lewis’s caption read, “At last the seasonal weather arrived in Oxfordshire”, and he photographed walkers, cyclists and joggers, but it was this dog walker, above, appearing through the mist on the Causeway in Steventon that really stole the show, providing us with a cracking front page on Wednesday.

You may have noticed it’s been Oxford Fashion Week, they’ve been here all week. I like this shot, above, from Mark Hemsworth of the Lingerie Show at Malmaison. With great symmetry, the edges of the catwalk lead the eye to the model. But I also like the way audience members are also well lit, so you can take in the whole room, and follow the gazes back towards the centre.
