Charlton boss Bob Peeters has explained why he didn’t draft in a loan striker this week despite bringing in a defender and midfielder.

The Belgian added centre half and free agent Oguchi Onyewu last Friday after agreeing to allow Michael Morrison to link up with Birmingham City, and on Monday in came Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin on loan until December 1.

Igor Vetokele has made a welcome return from injury but many fans remain concerned their team are too dependent on the prolific striker, fearing another spell on the sidelines could leave them struggling for goals again.

And although Peeters shares and understands that sentiment, the head coach was keen to stress it has to be the right forward who they bring in on loan – someone he doesn’t believe is out there right now.

The SE7 head coach said: “I want to sign a striker as well but at this moment I think the strikers who are available are too expensive or are not good enough to strengthen our squad.

“If you bring in a striker then you need to take your time and look at the striker whether he is good enough to come and strengthen us at this moment.

“We are looking for strikers, there is no doubt about that.

“We are looking for some other options as well, but then again if the strikers who can come on loan are not that good there is no use in bringing in a striker.

“It is better to wait until January and let the scouts do their work to get in a good striker.”
