Addicks head coach Bob Peeters says new signing Oguchi Onyewu is in no doubt he faces a tough task to get into Charlton’s first team.

The 32-year-old boasts an impressive CV which includes the likes of Newcastle, Standard Liege and AC Milan, but joined the Addicks yesterday as a free agent following Michael Morrison’s departure on loan to Birmingham City.

Peeters went with trusted duo Andre Bikey and Tal Ben Haim at the heart of Charlton’s defence for today’s 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

And the SE7 manager pointed out afterwards Onyewu was under no illusions about the challenge ahead trying to get above either of those two or the returning Joe Gomez in the pecking order.

He said: “Michael wanted to play, so if a player says I want to go somewhere else to play I don’t hold them.

“Then we looked for a replacement and we got (Oguchi) Onyewu.

“I explained the situation to Onyewu - we have Tal Ben Haim and Andre Bikey who are two good centre backs, Joe Gomez is coming back.

“I told him those are the top three at this moment and if he wants to be in the team he needs to show me that he is better than those three.”
