Bob Peeters was in full agreement returning striker Igor Vetokele makes a huge difference to Charlton following his equaliser in today’s 1-1 Valley draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

The visitors broke the deadlock on 27 minutes when Royston Drenthe drilled a low shot from outside of the box beyond the reach of Addicks keeper Stephen Henderson.

Top scorer Vetokele came off the bench to replace Franck Moussa on 65 minutes and within five minutes drew the hosts level by prodding home from close range after being picked out by Rhoys Wiggins’ excellent low ball.

Atdhe Nuhiu had a decent shout for a penalty ignored by Andy D’Urso after going to ground under an Andre Bikey challenge inside the area, while Vetokele fired just wide at the other end after being put through on goal by Jordan Cousins’ pass.

Lawrie Wilson saw a last minute effort ruled out for offside but a point apiece was probably about right from these two Championship draw specialists.

Asked post-match if Vetokele makes a difference for the Addicks, head coach Peeters replied: “I think everybody sees it.

“As soon as I called him to get ready to come on the whole stadium went delirious.

“You know that Vetokele and Gudmundsson are two quality players.

“We don’t have a big squad and you know they can make a difference.”

Peeters felt Charlton’s second half display merited at least a point but accepted Drenthe had proved a real handful in the opening period.

The Valley chief explained: “For me in the first 10 minutes we started well with high pressure, but then the only thing was up front we didn’t hold the ball well and then the ball comes back too easy.

“We know that their main threat is going to be Drenthe on our left side.

“One time we give the ball away - I think Karlan Grant loses the ball – they break and with quality he (Drenthe) runs past everybody and scores a superb goal.

“In the second half we changed Gudmundsson for Karlan Grant and we put Moussa high.

“Except for the first two or three minutes, I think we were far the better team.

“We changed also a bit some positions – Jordan Cousins was playing on the right in the middle and he was playing on the left to get an eye as well and physically give Drenthe a tough time.

“I think in the second half he (Drenthe) was out of the game.”

Peeters added: “We pushed, we got a lot of corners, a lot of blocked shots and we scored a deserved equaliser.

“You saw that Sheffield were struggling and then you think OK, you are going to get the second one.

“I think we did everything especially second half to win the game.”

The Belgian was non-committal when asked if Wednesday should have won a spot-kick for that challenge on Nuhiu.

“I need to see it back, maybe they could have got a penalty with Bikey – I don’t know.

“But also the goal of Lawrie Wilson - was it offside or not? I didn’t see the images.

“At a certain stage we gave a lot of space away because we were pushing for the three points, but to be fair I think second half my players did everything that we wanted from them.”
