Campaigners looking to protect Botley have, quite rightly, welcomed the change to the Vale of White Horse District Council’s Local Plan, meaning that future student housing could be blocked.

Having fought their cause for months, they believe the latest move will go some way to prevent Botley being seen as a ‘district centre for Oxford’.

But rather like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, it will not affect the West Way development.

Of course, it appears to make Doric’s justification of the amount of student accommodation weaker, but it doesn’t look likely to block the plans.

And with 525 student rooms planned by Doric, there probably won’t be much scope for extra student accommodation anyway.

While it does appear to be paying lip service to the residents, it does at least show that the Vale has taken on board comments made by people during the consultation.

Housing is such a sensitive issue across the whole county and the Local Plans will shape future development.

That’s why it’s so important councils listen to the people who will be affected and make relevant changes.

And while it may not help this time around in Botley, it will shape future generations.
