YOU would have thought that, in this day and age, there was nowhere new left to explore.

Well, think again.

Jericho’s Robert Pettersen is going to embark on a journey to a part of the planet that no humans have ever reached.

The 27-year-old has signed up to be a part of the Ice Warrior Challenge, which wants to trek to the Pole of Inaccessibility.

I suppose the name should give you a clue that this is no ordinary adventure, and no ordinary destination.

Mr Pettersen says: “The Pole of Inaccessibility remains the last truly significant place yet to be reached by mankind. No-one’s been to where we’re going – that’s very exciting.”

Exciting is one word for it. Daunting, scary and terrifying would be others that spring to mind. Especially as Mr Pettersen has no previous training in this field and has been getting into shape for the expedition with trips to the gym.

But it’s important to remember that this trip is not just about thrill-seeking and pushing yourself. There’s important data to compile about climate change while the team is there, which could affect everyone on earth and give us clues about the damage – or otherwise – we’re doing to the world we live in.

Good luck to all the team.

We just hope, however inaccessible their destination, Starbucks haven’t beaten them to it.
