COMMUNITY group across Oxfordshire are set to get more than £19,000 of funding from Oxfordshire County Council.

County councillor Hilary Hibbert-Biles, cabinet member for public health and the voluntary sector, will decide on Wednesday whether the funding should be handed out.

The money is part of the county council’s Chill Out Fund which is a £100,000 a year fund to support young people.

Applications adding up to a total of £21,000 have been received from six groups but county council officers have decided to award them £19,331 instead.

Jim Leivers, director for children’s services at the county council, said: “We know how children and young people spend their leisure time has an important influence and impact on their resilience and their quality of life. Constructive activities can increase positive attitudes, improve motivation, increase aspirations, develop social and life skills, enhance interpersonal skills and help build social capital.”

Council officers are proposing to give Cherwell Theatre Company £3,000 to for their 2015 performance of Robin Hood, Stanton Harcourt Parish Council’s SHAPE committee £4,347 for their play area project. Youth project Didcot TRAIN could be given £2,120 towards a three-day trip.

It is also proposed to give Magdalen College School £3,000 to host their Oxfordshire Youth Poetry Slam event, Banbury-based St Leonard’s Church Music Group £5,000 to provide free music lessons to young people and charity Parasol £1,864 to support their youth project.
