A 21-YEAR-OLD given an Asbo for using foul language has been jailed for year for handling stolen goods and careless driving.

Jed Denton, of Underhill Circus, Barton, in Oxford, pleaded guilty to committing both offences on July 13 this year, as well as breaching a suspended sentence.

Jonathan Stone, prosecuting, at Oxford Crown Court on Friday, said he was spotted by Pc Spencer Trehern in Woodeaton dividing up petrol stolen earlier that day between two canisters.

He said Denton then tried to escape in a Renault Laguna and drove in such a way that the officer and his police dog Daley were almost run over.

The barrister said another police car was also nearly struck when the defendant was spotted in Islip and tried to escape.

In November 2012 Denton was given a two-year Antisocial Behaviour Order banning him from using abusive or explicit language in public and congregating with two or more people in the Underhill Circus area.

Ronan McCann, defending, said it was not disputed that his client had been engaged in “some form of organised group activity’’.

But he said: “It has been difficult for Mr Denton to escape from the background he has grown up in and find employment. This has meant he has had to return to old habits to support himself.’’ Mr McCann added that Denton also acted as a carer for his disabled mother.

Judge Pringle told the defendant he had an “unenviable” record of appearing before the courts.

He said: “At your age you really do have two ways to go.

“You can keep coming back before the courts time and time again, or you can try and make something of your life.

“You must understand, Mr Denton, that you have a choice in life and if you don’t make something or yourself you will keep getting longer and longer sentences.’’

He sentenced him to a year in prison and told him to pay an £80 victims’ surcharge.
