MOTORISTS are urged to tread carefully during October’s national Tyre Safety Month.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging residents to take the 20p tyre test to ensure tyres are suitable for the coming months.

Drivers should get tyres inspected by a professional if the outer band of a 20p coin is visible after being inserted into a tyre groove.

A good tread should hide part of the inner band of the coin but a worn tread would show all the inner band.

Road safety manager Mick Clarke said: “Tyres are the only thing which connect vehicles to the road, so it is absolutely essential that they are in a proper condition, especially during wet weather.”

The road safety team is running roadshows around the county this month.

They take place at:

  • Faringdon Tesco on Tuesday
  • Thame town centre, Oct 13
  • M40 Ardley services, Oct 17
  • Marriotts Walk, Witney, Oct 20
  • Henley town centre, Oct 24
  • Toys R Us, Botley Road, Oxford, Oct 31.
