A SENIOR judge will be appointed to the position of Honorary Recorder for Oxford next week.
Judge Ian Pringle will be appointed by Oxford City Council to replace the current Honorary Recorder Judge Gordon Risius, who has held the position since 2011.
The position of Honorary Recorder is purely ceremonial but it is considered an important public role and the holder is invited to many of Oxford’s civic events such as Remembrance Sunday and the Lord Mayor’s Christmas reception.
It dates back to the system of Quarter Sessions and Courts Assize, which dealt with the most serious cases before 1971 when they were abolished and replaced with the present Crown Court system.

Judge Pringle has been appointed as the resident judge at Oxford Crown Court by the Lord Chancellor meaning he will become Honorary Recorder.
His appointment will be confirmed at a meeting of full council on Monday.
