AN “AMERICAN style” drive-in cinema is to take over an industrial car park in Oxford for five nights this month.

Cowley-based logistics, manufacturing and consultancy firm Unipart Group will host the films with supplier ByBox for free, as part of Photography Oxford.

It will be the city’s first international photography festival, taking place from September 14 to October 5, and has attracted some of the best snappers from across the globe.

Our sister paper, The Oxford Times, is the official media partner.

Unipart director of corporate affairs Frank Nigriello said: “The festival features a full programme of exhibitions, lectures and debates, but we noticed there was nothing taking place in East Oxford.

“So together with ByBox, we offered to add a different dimension to the festival by hosting a pop-up drive-in cinema event.

“Photography Oxford is going to be a great festival and we hope that residents and local businesses in Cowley and the surrounding areas come along to enjoy our event.”

Five films – all themed around photography in some way – will be shown from September 24 to 28, including movies by Alfred Hitchcock and Christopher Nolan.

From 7pm every night, residents can park in Unipart’s car park off Garsington Road and watch the movies on a large screen.

Admission is free, but the company has recommended visitors register in advance due to limited spaces.

Hot food, drinks and confectionery will be on sale, with the movies scheduled to start each night at 8pm.

Photography Oxford director Robin Laurance said: “We are very excited about our partnership with Unipart Group.

“Frank Nigriello has been supportive of the festival from the beginning and his idea to sponsor a drive-in cinema was the kind of imaginative contribution we were looking for. Together we have chosen films with photography as the theme. They are great films and guarantee an unusual but very special night out."
