The sound of a traditional British summer was played out in Carterton yesterday as the town bandstand hosted its final show for the year.

About 50 people brought deckchairs and picnics to enjoy music from Witney Town Band.

Carterton’s mayor, Lynn Little said: “It’s a British tradition and it’s one we’re very lucky to have in Carterton. The acoustics are tremendous — we really do have a fabulous grandstand.”

“It was wonderful to see so many people having a great afternoon in the sun.”

The mayor said she hoped to see bands of all ages use the Alvescot Road recreation ground facility next year and said trophies would also be handed out to the best performers in 2015.

Music teacher Nikki Jones, who usually conducts for Wantage Silver Band, led Witney Town Band yesterday.

The 43-year-old, from Minster Lovell, said the band played modern pop songs and classics from the First World War era to mark 100 years since the start of the conflict.

She said: “The weather was kind and the audience seemed very up for it.”
