Leisure centre upgrade starts with parking

NINETY-nine new spaces are being added to the car park at the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre in Abingdon.

Building work on a new overflow area next to the skate park began yesterday and is expected to take just over two months to complete.

New access roads, a new cycleway and a new pedestrian crossing are also being built, and work will take place to improve landscaping, drainage, lighting and signage.

Once the work is complete, improvements will be made to the existing car park, including resurfacing, upgrade of the alignment and markings of parking bays, the creation of five new disabled parking spaces and new signage.

Vale of White Horse District Council cabinet member for economy, leisure and property, Elaine Ware, said: “The centre is an extremely popular facility, however this has meant the car park’s capacity is exceeded on a regular basis, which causes issues both on-site and to adjacent roads.

“The lack of car parking has been a reoccurring theme of dissatisfaction for centre users, so I’m sure this increase in capacity will be a very welcome development.”

The new spaces will bring the total capacity of the car park to 343 cars and work is being carried out in two stages in an attempt to reduce the impact on the 700,000 people who use the centre each year.
