Allotment holders grow a cash crop

First published in News

ALLOTMENT holders have been selling off their spare vegetables to raise cash.

Gardeners at Cow Mead allotments in Abingdon Road, Oxford, raised £465 selling their potatoes, beans, courgettes and fresh eggs at an open day on Saturday.

The money will go towards the water bill for the site and new gravel for tracks. The allotments were inundated by floods in January and February.

Oxford Mail:

City councillor John Tanner, above, who has two allotments at the site, said some plants like garlic had suffered from the floods, while asparagus had thrived.

He said: “What is remarkable is how quickly it has recovered.

“We have got loads of allotment spaces, and it is the best therapy you can get. My heart lifts when I walk in there.

“It has been a very good summer for vegetables, a lot of hot sunshine and rain.”
