Martyn Woolford admitted he didn’t look at the table after his winning goal at Fulham put Millwall joint top of the Championship on Saturday.

The Lions continued their perfect start to the campaign thanks to Woolford’s 12th minute strike by the banks of the Thames.

Victory ensured a maximum return from the opening two fixtures with Ian Holloway’s side only being kept off the summit by Bournemouth’s superior goal difference.

But despite reaching those dizzy heights, Woolford denied he had checked out how the Championship was shaping up following the final whistle at Craven Cottage.

“I didn’t,” the 28-year-old said.

“I think we’ll just concentrate on the next game, keep the confidence from the performances we have been putting in and the wins that we are getting at the minute.

“Just look at the next game and try to keep improving all the time each game.

“But I’ve not really looked at the league table.”

Saturday’s result against recent Premier League opposition not only made Millwall early pace setters but also extended an unbeaten record going back to the final month of last season to 11 games.

“It’s a great run,” admitted Woolford.

“Even before the wins started coming the performances were getting to where we wanted them to be.

“We are getting our rewards from that.

“The wins keep building the confidence.

“The manager is a bit of a perfectionist so we are looking at every little thing we can improve, which is only a good thing.

“We are just learning all the time and getting better and better.”

Woolford also believes Holloway is the main cause of Millwall’s impressive start.

“It’s nearly all down to the manager,” he said.

“There have not been a lot of new faces, especially last season when we couldn’t win a game when he took over.

“The way that he got us organised in such a short period of time is a credit to how he works - the emphasis that he puts on the lads and the confidence that he gives us.

Woolford added: “It is a great start.

“We’ll go away and look at the things we didn’t quite do quite right and just keep improving.

“That’s all we can do – and look towards the next game.

“We are confident, regardless of the opposition, if we play our game and do the things the manager’s asking then we can pick up points wherever.”

Woolford was forced off with an injury just after the hour mark at Fulham but revealed afterwards it shouldn’t prevent him being available for tomorrow’s trip to Sheffield Wednesday

He added: “It’s just a dead leg.

“It’s not too serious. Hopefully I’ll be fit for Tuesday.”
