A LIBERAL Democrat councillor has called for a more “co-ordinated approach” to cycling routes across the city.

Andrew Gant, Oxford City Council representative for Summertown, said longer through-routes should be considered.

It comes after council head of transport John Tanner, of the Labour party, appealed for Oxford Mail readers on where cycle cash should be spent.

In July, we revealed that only about £15,000 of a dedicated £362,000 has been spent on the Cycle City scheme over the past two years.

Mr Gant said cycle lanes on streets such as Woodstock Road should extend all the way on both sides.

He said: “We welcome Cllr Tanner’s initiative.

“Bicycle lanes in side roads should co-ordinate better with those on major roads, for example the east end of Oakthorpe Road and west end of South Parade.

“We need a thought through and coordinated approach to through routes across the city.

“Too often bike lanes appear on new developments without sufficient thought about how they join up with the wider network.

“If Oxford residents can cycle safely and pleasantly across the city, they will.”
