OXFORDSHIRE’S amateur photographers were out in force on Sunday as a rare supermoon was on display.

Supermoons occur when a full moon reaches the point in its orbit which is closest to the Earth.

This means that the moon appeared unusually large and bright on Sunday evening around the globe.

Oxford Mail:

Headington resident Spike Holifield, 51, took this picture, above, of the moon from his back garden.

The sound engineer said: “I was just at home in the back garden.

“I went out to the shed and saw the moon through the break in the clouds so I set up a tripod.

“The moon was awesome and it was definitely worth taking the time to photograph it.”

Gem Toes, 32, from Kidlington, also took pictures she took of Sunday’s supermoon. She said: “I set up my tripod in the middle of the road and there were a lot of neighbours giving me funny looks. It was beautiful.”

The next supermoon will appear in September.
