A TOWN centre street in Witney is to be closed to traffic for several days over the next fortnight, during a £220,000 resurfacing project.

Parts of Corn Street will be closed from Monday, August 18, until August 28, with diversions in place via Welch Way and High Street.

It follows complaints by a resident last month that Oxfordshire County Council was wasting money by repairing potholes in the road just five weeks before the resurfacing work.

The road will be closed between Butchers Court and Holloway Road from Monday until next Wednesday, with car parking available west of Butchers Court.

It will be reopened from Thursday, August 21, to Bank Holiday Monday, August 25. The second phase will then begin and it will be closed again between Holloway Road and Marlborough Lane from Tuesday, August 26, until Thursday, August 28.

Limited parking will be available on Corn Street between Holloway Road and Butchers Court.

The council will also temporarily lift parking restrictions between Butchers Court and the bus depot in Corn Street.

Corn Street resident Olive Minett, 77, last month spotted workmen patching up the road despite asking the council to fix potholes in December when she fractured her thumb tripping in one.

The county council’s cabinet member for transport, David Nimmo Smith, said: “I am pleased that the council is investing in making this stretch of road better for all road users.

“The work will inevitably cause some disruption, and we have been in contact with councillors, businesses and residents to give them information on how to work around the restrictions.”
