A FOOTBALL boss from Chalgrove who died in a cycling crash will be remembered in a tournament featuring his former teams.

Up to 100 old teammates and colleagues are expected to take part in the competition at Abingdon Town Football Club to pay tribute to Derek Measor.

The 56-year-old BMW factory worker died when his bike was involved in a collision with a Nissan Micra on Watlington Road, near Garsington, on February 17.

Son Darren, 28, who helped organise the event, said: “It’s at a different point down the line for people who maybe didn’t go to the funeral, and it’s a chance for them to talk about my dad.

“Football was what he was well-known for, especially in Oxfordshire. Whenever we used to go anywhere there was always someone who he would know through football so it would be the most fitting thing to do.”

The round robin tournament, including his four former clubs, will be held on Saturday from 10.30am until 6pm at the Culham Road football ground.

It will raise money on the day for charity Diabetes UK because Mr Measor had type one diabetes.

The Manchester United fan spent 15 years at Rover Cowley FC in the Oxfordshire Senior League. He helped out at Watlington Town FC and Marston Saints and had spent last season as assistant manager of the Oxford University Press team.

He was married to Wallingford Community Hospital administrator Jacky, 53, and had two children, NHS business support worker Darren and Oxford City Council employee Vicki.

He cycled on the B480 every day to his job at the Mini plant in Cowley, where he had worked for 32 years as a paint sprayer and then factory worker.

His son said: “Six months isn’t really that much time to come to terms with what happened.

“There’s still a lot of things that haven’t been resolved in terms of the criminal case so it’s been difficult.

Johnson Nwanekezi, 40, of Beauvoir Road in Reading, will stand trial at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on September 29, accused of causing death by careless driving.
