CHILDREN from Blackbird Leys can take part in a more diverse summer activities programme after the scheme’s final funding was secured.
The Leys Community Development Initiative (CDI) annually holds the playscheme – which costs £5,000 – to entertain more than 100 children through the summer holidays. This year’s programme has now received £3,000 from Oxfordshire County Council’s Chill Out Fund, which aims to support work with children and young people across the county.
Without this funding – which will pay for most of the activities – the scheme would have been forced to cater for fewer children.
Youth project manager Marsha Jackson said: “This is going towards the projects in street art, sports, music technology, street dance, radio, samba drumming and newsletters. ““The money goes to any equipment needed, the tutors and the hire for the room.”
Leys CDI also received £1,000 from Blackbird Leys Parish Council in June for the project.
The project, now in its the 19th year is open to nine- to 19-year-olds. It costs £2 a day to attend the Leys CDI centre on Blackbird Leys Road with sessions starting daily at 10am. It finishes on Friday, August 22.
