A new brewery could be set up beneath Oxford’s main post office if a scheme to sell shares to the public proves successful.
Brewer Steve Chroscicki is planning to move from Norfolk to premises beneath the post office in in St Aldates, as part of his plans for the Old Fellow Craft Brewery.
He has said that beer could be in production early next year if he can raise £185,000 from supporters.
The 54-year-old said: “We came on a weekend break here and were surprised at how cosmopolitan and busy it was. It seemed a good place to open a brewery.”
Oxford used to have some big breweries but it doesn’t have them any more so it seemed like a good idea to bring one back.
“We want to offer the chance for anyone to get involved, so we will be selling a 40 per cent stake in the brewery by offering shares through a crowd-funding forum on our website.”
Mr Chroscicki, an engineer by training, previously set up the Front Street Brewery in Norfolk and has been a beer producer for 13 years.
He is currently in discussions with Merton College over leasing premises.
If the funding is gathered — which he hopes to do by the end of September — the brewery could open later this year or early in 2015.
The crowd-funding initiative will begin today.
