BICESTER'S 23 Pioneer Regiment will parade through the streets tomorrow in a farewell to the town where they have been stationed for more than 70 years.
From 12.30pm, 150 troops from the regiment, which is being disbanded, will march from St Edburg’s Church to Market Square and then on to Garth Park.
The regiment’s commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel David Clouston, will then lead speeches in the park.
The Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Tim Stevenson, and the mayor of Bicester, Lynn Pratt, will take the salute.
The mayor said: “I would encourage people to come down to the Market Square tomorrow and say goodbye.
“They aren’t leaving the town yet, but this will be their last public engagement and the last opportunity for people to see them. It will be a very sad day.”
Before the parade the soldiers, who are part of the Royal Logistic Corps, will attend a church service at St Edburg’s starting at 11.30am.
Since 1941 the Pioneers Regiment have been based, in some form, at St David’s Barracks in Bicester.
There are about 600 troops stationed at the barracks.
