MEDIEVAL pottery was discovered outside Wallingford Museum at its family archaeology day on Saturday.

The museum allowed children to assist with an archaeological dig in the courtyard of the High Street museum, letting them sieve fine dirt and wash pots.

Oxford Mail:

Pit leader Lindsey Bedford, above, said: “It was a very successful day. I hope we’ve taught people about the town’s history and inspired the youngsters to get interested as well.”

At a dig the team, from The Burh to Borough project, which was started by professionals at the University of Leicester, found tiles with a flower pattern that date from the 14th century.

Ms Bedford, from Thatcham in Berkshire, said: “We’re very lucky it broke in that way so we can see the flower motif.

“I would guess it’s from the priory, which was dissolved around then.”

The team of volunteers from The Wallingford and Archaeological Society have been digging in different locations across the town since 2008.
