A MEETING will be held tonight to update residents on the progress of proposals to redevelop the Jericho Wharf.

It will be hosted by the Jericho Community Association in St Barnabas School, in Hart Street, from 7.30pm.

The redevelopment would see a public “piazza” created in front of St Barnabas Church, off Canal Street, with a community centre, cafe, restaurant, boatyard facility and terraced housing.

And it is hoped that the square could also be brought into community ownership from private after it is finished.

The meeting comes as members of the Jericho Wharf Trust continue crunch talks with developer Strategic Iconic Assets Heritage Acquisition Fund (SIAHAF).

The residents’ group claims that the firm’s proposals have pushed up the cost of the community centre by £1.6m, to £6.6m.

This is because a section containing halls has been placed above the boatyard facility.

It is understood the two sides are trying to hammer out a deal which could see SIAHAF shoulder some of the additional cost.

A planning application was validated in June and is expected to go before Oxford City Council’s west area planning committee in the autumn.

The council is expected to make a decision by September 18.
