Protesters fight to stop housing plan

Oxford Mail: Protesters at the site Protesters at the site

CAMPAIGNERS have called plans to replace a community centre with flats an “insult to the people of Cowley”.

They gathered at the site in Barns Road, Oxford, on Saturday, against a proposal by the city council to build 40 flats.

Protesters were also demonstrating against the move to close the Temple Cowley Pools and Fitness Centre.

The council plans to close the Temple Road facility and replace it with a new multi-million pound pool in Blackbird Leys. The pool has now been registered as a community asset, meaning the Save Temple Cowley Pools group could buy it and save it for the community.

About 20 people were involved in the demonstration shortly after midday.

Dr Hojjat Ramzy, a representative of the Muslim Community of Oxford, was one of those who took part. He said: “These facilities are vital for the health and well being of the Cowley community. This is an insult to the people of Cowley.”

Isn't this all about competition between property developers?

SaveTCP CIC are working with developers on a plan to build out 30+ apartments as well as "community rooms" on the Temple Road brownfield site around a minute walk away.

This site, if built out to the same timescale, will be in direct competition.

Shame that the chap from Haboakus isn't working with SaveTCP CIC really - it would make quite a good TV programme - "Grand Business Designs?"...

Maybe if people had actually used the community centre when it was there and not the odd five or six people it would have survived.

The council plans to close Oxford Town Hall and replace it with a new multi-million pound Town Hall in Bicester.

So don't complain, you'll get a shiny new town hall and still be able to get the bus to it.

Surely we need flats at the TCP site AND on Barns Rd? We need more homes in general and better to have them somewhere, like Cowley, that already has shops, schools, bus routes etc.

Geoff, Bicester is about 45 mins away whereas BBL is about 8 min from Cowley... bit of a difference!

In most UK provincial towns doesn't one sect tend to dominate as people migrate to where there are already family members or friends from the same country? All the same it would be interesting to learn which.
