CANCER sufferers and their loved ones can get support in a state-of-the-art new charity facility which opened at Oxford’s Churchill Hospital yesterday.
Maggie’s opened a treehouse-style facility opposite the Headington hospital’s main entrance. It is a meeting place for sufferers and loved ones to meet, chat and get practical support from staff for issues like benefits.
The national charity’s facility opened in 2006 in portable buildings in a hard-to-find part of the site.
The new £3m facility has four consulting rooms, kitchen and toilets for 7,000 annual visitors with five volunteers and five staff.
Clinical psychologists, a nutritional adviser, fundraiser and cancer support advisers are on hand alongside support groups. Work started in March last year and has been funded by individual donations and fundraising.
Head of the centre Claire Marriott said: “We are absolutely delighted that we are finally able to open our doors.
“Because we are much closer to the hospital people can easily access appointments, have much more space and we will be able to offer a fuller programme of support.”
