OXFORD councillors and residents carried out an inspection of Port Meadow last night to maintain a long-standing annual tradition.
Blackbird Leys councillor and current Sheriff of Oxford Rae Humberstone led fellow councillors, the Freemen of Oxford and Wolvercote Commoners on the inspection of the historic open space, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, to check that it is being properly maintained.
Mr Humberstone said: “It’s a quaint tradition and we’ve got to keep it going.
“It’s not going to change the world in any way, but it’s unique to Oxford and it’s all part of Oxford life. Like the pub game Aunt Sally, we want to keep these things going.”
