ONE of Abingdon’s oldest residents, Doris Hyde, turned 104 yesterday and celebrated with a party at the Old Station House care home.

More than 100 people turned out to celebrate Mrs Hyde, including Abingdon’s mayor Angela Lawrence.

Mrs Hyde, who has lived in Abingdon her whole life, said to her guests: “Thank you everybody for coming and making it a very special day. I’m very pleased to see everyone here.”

Mrs Hyde had five children, but only daughter Christine, is still alive.

She worked as an auxiliary nurse at various hospitals, including the John Radcliffe in Oxford.

Christine Salsbury said: “It was a wonderful afternoon, she really enjoyed it.

“She spoke to everybody and made a speech and cut the cake. The home put on a massive spread and a beautiful cake.”

Mrs Salsbury, who herself is 70, said: “It’s lovely that mum is still with us and that I can enjoy my old age with her still here.”

"The work is expected to be completed by the end of November, with a six-day working week to get the scheme finished on target."

If they worked through the night when there's less traffic about then they'd probably finish it by August.
