Picture Special: A caravan turned classy bar, a magpie and lights fantastic

10:00pm Saturday 24th May 2014

I love Tony Moore’s crop here – it leaves a great bit of space for London Welsh’s Gordon Ross to follow his ball skywards. So often sports pictures are tight action shots – this is a refreshing change.

Oxford Mail:

For our business pages, Damian Halliwell photographed Richard and Svetlana Jones with a beautiful Airstream Caravan converted into a Champagne bar. All the shiny steel has the light bouncing everywhere and I thought this ‘detail pic’  above worked really well.  (NB: despite coming from Rotherham, I do realise that WKD is not a brand of bubbly.)

Oxford Mail:

Nice composition and lighting from Jon Lewis above. I like the way skin tones and yellow lamp lights glow with warmth in contrast to the cool blues, showing Rycotewood Furniture centre student Will Griffiths with his pendant lampshades for Arts weeks.

Oxford Mail:

By placing your horizon in the top third of your image, you make a stronger composition. This is part of the ‘rule of thirds’ – one of the few compositional theories I think is worth paying attention to. Having captured some close-up action, of reed bed planting at the wetlands area, Shillingford, Ed Nix backed right off to get this splendid wide angle landscape view above. Combined with the dramatic sky, it’s made a lovely picture.

Oxford Mail:

I love this picture above, it has such a powerful composition with all lines leading to the student in the middle. But then we see the students in their flats reacting to the noise of the passing re-routed buses due to George Street being closed. He’s captured all the elements of the story and created an image with immense impact.

Oxford Mail:

This week a homeless couple told us how they’d rescued and adopted a baby magpie, above. This is just a lovely moment, capturing the trust the baby magpie has for Lottie Pauling. A sweet picture indeed by Damian Halliwell.

Oxford Mail:

Outfits and props and bits of kit are always welcome to a photographer. Here Andrew Walmsley uses them to good advantage, as he snaps girls at Oxford High School who are going to L’Oreal to test shampoos. I understand we are leaving the animal testing question out of this.
