EXOTIC animals have already started appearing on Cowley Road in preparation for this year’s Cowley Road Carnival.

At a workshop at East Oxford Community Centre on Wednesday, artistic carnival supporters were decorating flags and banners which will adorn the street.

Isis Howes, 22, and Leigh Bayley, 13, were among those who joined the class run by Fusion Arts.

They were making animal masks for primary schools inspired by Oxford author Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights trilogy as part of the event.

Miss Howes said: “We were creating head masks for primary schools, it was great fun.”

Next Wednesday’s workshop at the community centre will see artists from 14 to 25 constructing a giant polar bear puppet which will join the carnival.

The workshop will run from 10am to 3pm.

Musicians, bands and giant carnival animals will be taking over Cowley Road on Sunday, July 6.
