CONTROVERSIAL plans to demolish a former Habitat store and build more than 130 homes in Wallingford should be approved, a planning officer has said.

A report to South Oxfordshire District Council said there is “no reasonable prospect” of the Hithercroft Industrial Estate building being used for a business.

Lightwood Property has applied to build 94 homes and 40 extra care homes to provide supported living to people aged 55 and over.

A total of 40 per cent of the homes would be affordable and the scheme would include a 2,610sqm commercial building.

Wallingford Town Council objected over concerns it would “reduce current employment land” despite a recognised need by the district council for such land.

It also raised concerns about impact on drainage and said: “The care home is proposed to be in too close a proximity to existing, noisy industrial units.”

The town branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England said it is keen to see the site redeveloped.

The developer will be legally obliged to give cash “to ensure the development does not place an unacceptable strain on the existing infrastructure”.

The planning committee meets on Wednesday at 6pm at the council’s offices in Crowmarsh Gifford.

Seems like exactly the sort of site that should be developed for housing rather than using green field sites. Perhaps Oxford City could take a hint and look at some of the premises on Osney Mead industrial estate that have been empty for years.

Rubbish this would be tight for so many reasons its an industrial estate and should remian as one, we dont have the town space, shops or even schooling for so many more houses, we need to expand in other areas creating jobs before we introduce more houses. Try getting a Drs Appt that will tell you how already over crowded this little town is, We need buisness and prospects not more houses with not enough parking so spills out into other streets and on main road, get the buisness then the people !!!

What Cornflake says. Problem with Wallingford is that it's got a 1 way system at the heart of it and a river on the side. These houses will not be included in the building quotas imposed by central government. If you build too much the place will become grid locked around the traffic lights and the bridges (it already is, with high pollution levels in the High Street). Building more houses is fine but 130 on a plot the size of 2 football pitches is too much. Besides it's in the middle of a very nosy industrial estate. The honey factory runs day and night and residents who are much further away already complain about the noise. Do we really want accommodations that are crammed and noisy built in the middle of an industrial estate / traffic jam? Again, the priority seems to be profit for the developers and not the well being of the existing and future community.

Anybody who wants to start a business or relocate please drive around the Hithercroft Industrial estate and you will see plenty of To Let signs. Some of them have taken root .
I believe this would not be the case if new houses were built even if the local environment wasn't pleasant. They would be snapped up. Handy to nip to Morrisons as well.
