RAF base lays its old standard to rest

IT WAS no standard ceremony when RAF Benson laid to rest a long-serving flag.
Airmen from the base, near Wallingford, paraded through the town on Tuesday, before retiring its 1988 standard at the town’s St Mary-le-More Church.
Wing Commander Mark Biggadike, who commands 33 Squadron, said its new standard was consecrated in a parade and ceremony in front of Prince Michael of Kent last May.
He added: “While a royal parade is befitting for a new standard, I think it is highly appropriate for the retired standard to be laid to rest locally.”
He added: “33 Squadron has been based at RAF Benson since 1997 and the squadron and its personnel have developed close ties with the local community.
“It is clear from the splendid ceremony that those ties are as healthy as ever and it was great to see such support from the town.
“It was a very proud moment for me.”
