A Bicester school is the worst in Oxfordshire for "adding value" to its pupils, according to figures released in 2007.

Bicester Community College also had one of the county's worst percentages of pupils achieving five A* to Cs at GCSE including English and maths.

Only 21 per cent of pupils at the college in Queen's Avenue got five good grades, including the two core subjects, last year.

Former Bicester headteacher Michael Waine, now Oxfordshire County Council's cabinet member for schools' improvement, said: "Bicester Community College's results could not be described as anything other than poor."

But he added: "I am pleased that the community college now accepts they have got a lot of work to do on their results.

"The local authority is now very involved with the senior staff in the school in putting together a rigorous improvement agenda."

At Cooper School, in Churchill Road, 41 per cent of pupils achieved five good grades including English and maths - but it still finished towards the bottom of the county table.

In comparison, Banbury's Blessed George Napier school got 53 per cent, Gosford Hill School in Kidlington got 47 per cent, and the Marlborough School in Woodstock got 56 per cent.

Each school was also given a figure to show how well its pupils had progressed between the age of 11 and taking GCSEs.

More than 1,000 shows the expected amount of added value has been surpassed, while less than 1,000 indicates expected improvement had not been attained.

Bicester Community College's score - the worst in the county - was 977.8.

Cooper also failed to add expected value with a score of 995.6.

But Mr Waine said Cooper was making good strides.

He said: "I would like to congratulate their new head, the staff and the pupils on being a fast-improving school.

"It's very strong compared with its previous performance. I know that they are anticipating and working for further improvements."

When asked whether it was acceptable that both Bicester's schools were towards the bottom of the league table, Mr Waine said: "It is not an acceptable situation.

"But in my view, Cooper is now on its way to becoming a fast improving school.

"I have got confidence that under the leadership in Cooper, things are moving ahead and I have now got the hope that there is to be change at Bicester Community College."

Cooper headteacher Ben Baxter said the school's results had increased seven percentage points compared to the previous year.

He said the value-added mark had also increased.

And he added the difference between the results including English and maths, and those excluding them, was smaller than the national average.

He said: "You do have to take league tables with a pinch of salt. You have to look at every single student and what their base line starting figure is and what they end up with."

No one from Bicester Community College was available to comment.
