Taxi fares set to rise

Oxford Mail: Taxi fares going up Taxi fares going up

PART of taxi fares will rise by 20 per cent in West Oxfordshire.

West Oxfordshire District Council approved a request by a group of seven taxi firm owners to increase the maximum fare for the first one-tenth of a mile from £2 to £2.40. The charge of 20p for eeach subsequent tenth of a mile remains unchanged.

The council held a 14-day public consultation, which ended on Thursday, and there were no objections to the rise from the public.

The revised changes come into force this week.

Am just trying to remember when West Oxfordshire or Oxfordshire County held 'consultations' with public transport users about rail and especially bus fares and fare increases? Like with de-regulated buses, the idea that there is no collusion by taxi operators is laughable, as there seems little or no choice for the public over the cost of taxi fares - and outside the highly-regulated 'black cabs' there seems little or no regulation for cab operators to run disability-friendly vehicles which offer wheelchair access for all their vehicles. This, in direct contrast to most public service vehicles (buses) which are now wheelchair and disability-friendly - and how many saloon cars can get a couple of full-blown baby-buggies in the boot?

Taxi fares are an absolute joke. I don't care how much petrol and insurance are for them, there isn't a justification for £15 from Bicester to one of the villages and there is certainly no justification for taxis charging £50 to get from Oxford to Bicester. I while back I had a cab from Banbury to Bicester as I had fell asleep on the last train from Marylebone and it cost me £18 from Banbury at around 12.30pm and the distance is almost double that of the Oxford to Bicester.

£50 to Bicester... Utter made up story. If it was a black cab it would have metered no more than £30, if you pre ordered it they would have given you a price. If you think you was fiddled why not report it?
