A four-year-old girl has been seriously injured after being hit by a car in Oxford this morning.

The incident happened in Between Towns Road, Cowley, at 10.50am, and the road was closed for an accident investigation to take place.

Thames Valley Police said the child, who was on a bicycle, was on the pavement when she was struck by a red Hyundai which was crossing the pavement as it pulled out of a car park onto the road.

The girl was taken by ambulance to the John Radcliffe Hospital where she is currently being treated for her injuries.

The male driver of the vehicle was not hurt in the incident.

Between Towns Road was partially closed for two hours while officers carried out a forensic investigation of the scene. It has now reopened.

Gill Hodgetts, a spokesman for South Central Ambulance, said: "The girl suffered pelvic injuries and is in a serious condition.

"She was taken by ambulance to the John Radcliffe Hospital."
