PART of Oxford’s Town Hall could be leased out as part of the council’s savings plan.

Oxford City Council is set to agree next Wednesday on a lease with a county firm for an office block which forms part of the St Aldate’s building.

Details of the lease are confidential at this stage but a report says the agreement will allow the council to share in the profits of the company.

It also hopes the move – for offices on the corner of High Street – will save more than £20,000 a year on bills and business rates.

Council disposals and lettings surveyor Julia Castle said: “The offers received are from three parties each on a management agreement basis and also on a conventional lease basis where previously there had been no interest. One of the lease based offers also provides for an element of additional profit share.”

This is not the first time the city council has leased out part of Town Hall. Last year it put up for lease a flat in the historic building.

The office block was built in 1931 as an extension of Town Hall and replaced Carfax House and the Castle Inn which were demolished in the previous decade.

This is just the latest in a number of properties which the city council has vacated to save money, Its Blue Boar Street offices were sold for £3.255m in 2011 and Ramsey House in St Ebbe’s which housed 150 staff in planning, environmental health and licensing was also sold, for £5m.
