OXFORD’S Park End Street is on course to reopen tomorrow after work to repair a sewer was completed ahead of schedule.

Thames Water closed the city centre street on Monday to remove a mass of fat and other waste – dubbed “fatberg” – that had caused a partial collapse of the sewer.

It originally estimated the repairs would take two weeks to complete but engineers finished on the site yesterday and resurfaced the road.

The new surface will now be left to set before the road is reopened.

Drivers have been forced to wait in long queues over the past four days because of the road closure.

Temporary traffic lights were in place at the access points to Frideswide Square.

Thames Water spokeswoman Sarah Sharpe said the road should be open by tomorrow at the latest but it would depend on weather conditions.

Meanwhile, Oxfordshire County Council was yesterday still trying to find out what caused a hole to open up in Walton Street, Jericho.

It closed the street on Wednesday as Thames Water inspected the site.

Council spokesman Martin Crabtree said engineers were inspecting it and the council would only decide when the road could reopen once its cause had been established.
