Authors Philip Pullman, pictured, and Mark Haddon have signed an online petition against Government restrictions on books being sent to prisoners.

The Oxford novelists have joined a call on Ministry of Justice minister Chris Grayling to review a decision which means only letters and cards from family can be sent to prisoners.

So far, more than 14,000 people have also signed the online petition on change.org

Quentin Walker says...

Prisons have libraries for which Phillip Pullman and his colleagues receive annual payments from copyright.

If parcels are being used to smuggle in drugs, to the detriment of society as a whole and not just the prisoners, then they should be banned and perhaps Mr Pullman should preserve his political views for his next tome.

King Joke says...

Surely it is not beyond the wit of prison authorities to distinguish between a book and packets of drugs? This has nothing to do with smuggling and everything to do with making life as miserable as possible for prisoners, for cheap political ends. It can hardly help with rehabilitation if prisoners are denied books. What if the library books are rubbish and you've read them all?
