A driver has admitted speeding in fog at more than 80mph in a 30mph zone in Oxford.

Edward Hembrow, 29, of The Green, Horspath, pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving in Cuddesdon Road, Horspath, on January 21.

Thames Valley Police officers caught Hembrow speeding at 84mph in the 30mph zone — almost three times the speed limit — at 8.27am.

The fog created hazardous driving conditions that morning, according to Thames Valley Police.

Hembrow pleaded guilty at Oxford Magistrates’ Court on February 28 and on Friday magistrates sentenced him to a 12-month community order and 200 hours of unpaid work.

PC Steve Moses, based at Banbury police station, who led the investigation, said: “This sort of driving will not be tolerated on our roads and Thames Valley Police will seek prosecution of any drivers who flout the law.

“It was by pure luck that someone was not seriously injured or killed during this incident, especially when you bear in mind the poor weather conditions, location, time of day and the speed involved.”

Hembrow was also disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
