I was caught up in this, and couldn't understand why the police on the scene directing the traffic around the broken down vehicle didn't just push it(assuming it was pushable of course) the 50 yards or so down to the Barnard gate turning and off the main road. The queues stretched back to West Witney and could have so easily been avoided if a little common sense had been used. It's pretty rare for a vehicle to be so immobilised that it isn't able to be moved, and this would have saved a lot of people a lot of time.

If the Police had any common sense along with local knowledge, the east bound traffic could have all been diverted around Barnard Gate, and the west bound would have had free passage around the stricken vehicle and delays would have been minimal. Instead of that four people on the bus I was traveling on missed their rail connections at Oxford station due to the delay.
