    If this were feasible it would result in a lowering of the river level in the Thames Valley, - why can it not be done?

    The excess floodwaters would then rejoin the Thames at Brentford where they can't do any damage.
    Can see a couple of problems with this idea:

    Cutting a 25km channel to join them up, nearest point is near Aylesbury

    The canal being designed to retain water in each section between locks, not discharge to the sea, very small if any weir capacity

    The canal cross section being less than 10% of the Thames at Oxford"
