A CARE home for the elderly has been warned it must make improvements after it failed to meet five out of eight national standards.

St Katharine’s House in Wantage received two surprise visits from the Care Quality Commission in November and December.

Inspectors issued formal warnings relating to the care and welfare of residents and the assessing and monitoring of the quality of services.

The visits followed up concerns identified at the 76-bedroom Ormond Road home, run by Gold Care Homes, in October when a first warning was issued.

Inspectors found that while action had been taken to address some of the concerns about residents’ care, there were still problems.

Adrian Hughes, CQC regional director for the South, said: “Our view is that people living in St Katharine’s House are not at immediate risk of harm, but that this is due in part to our work and that of the local authority.

“The management team has not taken full responsibility in relation to people’s safety and managing risk.

“The provider of St Katharine’s House has told us of the actions it is taking to fully address the concerns we have raised. If they fail to make the required changes, and don’t demonstrate compliance with the national standards by providing good quality care, we will take stronger action.”

St Katharine’s House declined to comment.
